I've been thinking on this question from you the past few days. It's funny, I read todays Hazelden 24 hours reflection and it says "We also strengthen our faith by working with other alcoholics and finding that we can do nothing ourselves to help them, except to tell them our own story of how we found the way out." This is the whole point of AA, to share our experience, strength and hope of how we stay sober. If everyone in AA is sober and telling you they did it with a sponsor then it makes sense because it's working for them. You don't really hear people with long lengths of sobriety say they did it without one, at least I haven't yet. I've had multiple lengths of sobriety without sponsorship, 3-4 years, but I obviously came back. Like some people have said, that sponsor and sponsee relationship is different than regular network of sober people. It's a more intimate relationship. Someone you trust to REALLY share everything with with no shame or fear of judgement. I know for me I will always hold certain things back from certain people but with my new sponsor, he has showed me he has done it and been through it and that I can share anything with him. I also trust him to call me on my stuff. It's just different. I don't think anyone is bragging about having a sponsor, it may just be something in you that is taking it that way. The only way for me to stay sober is complete surrender to a higher power, realizing I am weak and broken and cannot fix myself on my own strength and understanding. If that were the case, it would t be so hard for everyone to stay sober. I have to be open minded and realize my best thinking for me where I am at today. Think of a sponsor like someone you sort of idolize because they have what you want. Well if you want it you have to get close to them and figure out what they went through to get where he are at. I can't say man, that guy is an amazing business owner and just see where he is at now and decide to have everything he has. I have to see what schooling he went through, what his failures were like so I'm not surprised when I have them etc....I suggest you give it a shot from my experience doing it without one has only worked so far so I'm giving this a go with one. Hope this helps man.

Very well stated!
Some people are just too smart for AA.
If you can not drink alone but it sucks⊠there is a better way. I have a sponsor and my life doesnât suck.
Dan w -soflw .said it all. With out help where would I be. AađȘ
Keep it simple.!!!!!
What happens when you're on your own and AA and your sponsors aren't there for you? Are you going to fold or realize you need to finally rely on yourself. Toughen up and stop making excuses for yourself. AA is a program not a way of life.
I continued AA for ab 6 months after I got out of rehab. I would tell anyone your 90 in 90 is very important to kick start your sobriety, sit and listen to people just like you, proves 2 things: youâre not alone and you really truly do have a very unhealthy relationship with alcohol. However I am 32 month sober and live life free of AA, the whole pressure to get a sponsor and the judgment reminded me of like a sorority back in college. Not for me. The idea that you need to depend on AA to stay sober, and not yourself? No thanks! Thatâs my two. Whatever works is what works for you! Stay strong keep fighting the good fight friend!

I donât have a sponsor either but Iâm doing well! Doing Loosid and in therapy and consider my therapist my sponsor! Everyone has a different journey and path! I like meditation and reading and listening to podcasts! If it works not having one that is a personal choice doesnât mean your going to fail!
While I can say that having a sponsor has helped me tremendously, nowhere in the Big Book does it say anything about sponsorship.
Maybe not in those words. But working with others is a great chapter

I was in a program that did step work as a group first few years. Then was active in church, and therapy. After some mental health issues I started going to meetings again and got a sponsorâŠ. The thing that has been most helpful is someone who knows all of me and can give me feedback when Iâm
Being mean to myself and others.
I'm asking out of curiosity. I've always walked through life alone so I figured why not do this on my own as well. But I'm not always right which is why I wanted everyone else's opinion on the matter.
Thanks for being so blunt. Your right on alot of the topics you touched. Maybe I'm just being baby about this and making excuses because Im afraid to try something that might actually work. Which eventually would prove my theory wrong on the whole idea. Sometimes in life we need to be given things without a sugar coating so don't apologize for being yourself. Thanks for your comment.
Well I'll be. Who taught you how to get through to me? No one has put it so blunt to me that has actually made me listen. I agree with everything you said. You're absolutely right about me and how I think is not healthy. You're right I'm scared of having to rely on someone else because people have failed me my entire life so my trust in them has gone with the wind. However you have gotten through to this stubborn soul and made me think of the other possibilities to recovery.
You have changed my one sided mind to being open to new avenues. Congratulations you did what ever one on here couldn't. You got through to me and have actually got me thinking now.
Funny how that works when you find someone stronger than you and they can read through your BS.
